If you're new to our farm, you might be wondering, "okay, what's going on here? These people must be crazy". It's true - at first glance it might seem like we have our heads in the clouds with all the big ideas "we" (aka Johnny) have come up with. I promise, our feet are firmly planted on the ground and we have personal experience with the struggles that come with building a farm. However, we believe that experience is the best teacher and there is no replacement for the lessons that can be learned from jumping into life feet first.
So, that is exactly what we have done each step of the way. Want to grow a vegetable garden? Just ask to rent the small plot of land from the farmer next door. Need a plastic layer to prepare the ground? No problem, we can DIY that for sure! (Spoiler alert - that did not work out well). Want backyard chickens? Absolutely! But we don't want just 5 or 6, let's get 17 - the more the merrier! Grew too many pumpkins on our new property? No better time than the present to start a full-fledged pumpkin patch in the middle of apple harvest and two full-time jobs.
Are we shocked when things don't always work out as planned? Not really because, let's be honest, our plan was likely half-baked to start. Despite the bumpy road that has brought us here today, we have come a long way from where we began, thanks to the ever-present help of our friends and family. The support of the community that has surrounded us in this farming journey has been the driving force behind each of our successes and the landing pad to catch us after each failure along the way.
This community has become our focus. As we have learned, there is greater strength in numbers than in any individual pursuit, and when we work together, our local towns begin to thrive on another level. We hope that as our farm develops, we can grow closer to friends, neighbors, and bring more people in to this community.
Over the past century, our society has become more disconnected from where their food comes from and has forgotten the importance of gathering together. The future of this farm is to become a bustling hub for the local community; where we can foster connection and teach others that sustenance comes from both good food and good fellowship. Join us.
